Strength and Stiffness

This week in Design and Technology, we have added to our knowledge of structures and how we can make them stronger and how to improve them.

First, we tested the strength of a cylinder, triangular prism and cuboid by discovering how much weight they could hold. We found out that the cylinder could hold the most weight.

We discussed that this was because the whole structure supports the weight instead of just the corners - in comparison to the other shapes.

In tables, we made a cylinder out of card and recorded how many books we could put on top to see how strong it was. After, we compared cylinders from all the tables and realised many ways of how to increase stiffness and strength. One way is, if we layered the shape with more card, then it became more stiff and therefore, stronger!
